Custom domains and DNS
A custom domain lets customers visit your website at an address such as www.yourbusiness.com. You keep managing the website in TREVY and manage the domain registration and DNS with your domain provider.
TREVY uses the www address for the website. The address without www, called the root domain, can redirect to it. The mobile setup walks you through both connections.
Before you start
Publish your website first and make sure you can edit your domain's DNS records. You need to own or control the domain; entering an address in TREVY does not buy or register it. Keep your DNS provider open in a browser while you work through the app.
Custom-domain setup is available with active subscription access or during the website's subscription grace period. Connecting a domain does not extend that grace period.
If the domain already serves another website, changing its web records will move that traffic to TREVY. Keep a copy of the existing records so you can restore them if needed.
Keep your email records
Update only the web records involved in this setup. Keep MX records and email-related TXT or CNAME records, including SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. You do not need to replace your nameservers to follow this guide.
1. Enter your domain in TREVY
Open Website → Domains → Custom domain. Enter your domain and tap Continue. The mobile app adds www and removes https:// or a page path if you paste a full URL.
For example, yourbusiness.com becomes www.yourbusiness.com. Review the address before continuing to Set up DNS. If TREVY says the domain is already connected to another website, check the address and resolve that existing connection before retrying.
2. Find your DNS settings
Sign in where your domain's DNS is managed. This may be different from the company where you bought the domain. Look for DNS, DNS records, DNS zone, or Zone editor.
Providers use different labels for the same fields:
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Type | The record type: CNAME or A. |
| Name / Host | The part of your domain the record applies to. |
| Value / Target / Points to | The destination supplied by TREVY. |
| TTL | How long DNS answers may be cached. Use the provider's default or automatic setting unless you have a reason to change it. |
Some providers add your domain name automatically after the host. Enter www, not www.yourbusiness.com.yourbusiness.com. The @ symbol normally means the root domain; follow your provider's instructions if it uses an empty name instead.
3. Add DNS Record 1: www
Use the values on the app's first DNS card:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | CNAME |
| Name / Host | www |
| Value / Target | Copy the hostname shown in TREVY |
Paste only the target hostname, without https:// or a page path. Use the current value from the app rather than an IP address or a value from an old guide.
Replace conflicting web records for the exact same www host, such as an old A, AAAA, or CNAME record. Do not delete unrelated subdomains or email records.
If your provider offers proxying, use DNS only while verifying. Also avoid flattening this www CNAME: TREVY needs to be able to find its CNAME destination.
Save the record at your DNS provider, return to TREVY, and tap Verify DNS. Once it succeeds, choose Next DNS record.
4. Add DNS Record 2: the root redirect
This record sends customers from yourbusiness.com to www.yourbusiness.com.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | A |
| Name / Host | @ |
| Value / IPv4 address | Copy the IPv4 address shown in TREVY |
Use the numeric IPv4 address from the second DNS card, not the CNAME hostname. Review existing root web records and replace those pointing to the previous website, including stale A or AAAA destinations that could send visitors elsewhere. Keep email records intact.
Save the record, then tap Verify DNS on the root DNS step. The www record must be verified first. Both records being verified completes the setup.
5. Check both addresses
Open the www address in a browser, then open the same domain without www. The root address should redirect to the www website. Your default TREVY address also redirects to the verified custom domain.
DNS checks and browser access can update at different times because answers are cached. If a change is not visible yet, allow time and try again. For example, GoDaddy advises that DNS updates can take up to 48 hours globally; your provider's guidance may differ.
Help for common DNS providers
Use the provider's guide to find its record editor, then enter the TREVY values above, not the example destinations in that guide.
- Cloudflare: use DNS-only records for verification. See DNS record types and CNAME flattening settings. Flattening all CNAMEs can prevent a service from verifying a CNAME destination.
- GoDaddy: follow Add a CNAME record for the
wwwrecord. - Namecheap: follow Create a CNAME record. For TREVY's root redirect, use the A record supplied in the app.
Troubleshooting
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| CNAME record not found | Confirm the host is www, the type is CNAME, and the destination matches the app. Check that you edited the active DNS provider and that proxying or flattening is not hiding the CNAME. |
| Record points somewhere else | Replace the old web destination with the value shown in TREVY, save it, then wait and verify again. |
| Root verification fails | Verify www first. Check the root A record uses @ and the supplied IPv4 address. |
| www works but the root does not | Finish and verify DNS Record 2, and check for old root records or forwarding rules. |
| Some visitors see the old site | Cached DNS answers or conflicting web records may still point at the previous host. Review the records and allow propagation time. |
| The DNS check times out | Check your connection and retry; a timeout does not confirm that the record is wrong. |
| DNS is verified but the site will not open | Check that the website is published and subscription access has not expired. If HTTPS shows a certificate error or access still fails, contact TREVY support with the domain and exact error. |
Disconnect or change your domain
Use Disconnect in Custom domain and confirm. Your website returns to its default TREVY address, provided it is still published and has website access. Disconnecting also removes the root redirect setup in TREVY.
TREVY does not edit the records at your DNS provider or cancel the domain registration. Remove or replace the old web records there as appropriate. To connect a replacement domain, enter it in TREVY and complete both DNS steps for that domain.
