Scan and attach receipts

Receipts are the evidence for your expenses. TREVY can read a receipt photo with AI and suggest the expense details for you, and you can attach one or more receipt images to any expense.

Scan a receipt

Receipt scanning reads a photo, suggests values, and starts a new expense with those values filled in.

  1. Start a new expense from Expenses or the + menu.
  2. TREVY opens the receipt scanner. Frame the whole receipt and capture it. If you cancel capture, you can continue with manual entry.
  3. TREVY reads the receipt. You will see a short Reading receipt step while it works.
  4. Review the details TREVY filled in, correct anything that is wrong, and save.

Receipt scanning suggests:

  • Supplier name and Tax ID (ABN)
  • Purchase date
  • Total
  • Description
  • Category

The scan is a suggestion, not a guarantee. Always check each value against the receipt before you save, including the paid status and GST settings that may come from app defaults rather than the scan. The captured image is carried into the new expense form; scanning alone does not save an expense.

If reading the receipt fails after capture, TREVY can keep the image in the form so you can enter the details manually.

Supplier matching

When the scan names a supplier, TREVY checks it against your saved suppliers:

  • Matched — TREVY found the supplier and applies it, including its default category. The banner explains that the receipt was matched and asks you to check the details.
  • Possible match — TREVY found a close match for you to review. Choose to use the suggested supplier, or pick a different one.
  • No match — You select an existing supplier or create a new one from the expense.

Scan limits and availability

Receipt scanning may not always be available:

  • TREVY allows a limited number of receipt scans each day. When you reach the limit, TREVY explains that you have used your scans and lets you enter the expense manually.
  • If scanning is unavailable, TREVY offers to continue manually.
  • Receipt scanning is part of TREVY Core.

Attach receipts manually

You can add receipts to an expense without scanning, either while creating it or later from its details.

  1. While creating an expense, use its Receipts section. For a saved expense, swipe from Details to Photos.
  2. Tap to add a receipt and choose Take Photo or Choose from Gallery.
  3. Capture or select one or more images.

You can attach up to 10 receipt images to an expense through this mobile flow. Adding an image later stores it as evidence; it does not automatically scan it or replace the saved expense details. Additional receipt uploads require subscription access.

View and remove receipts

Open an expense and switch to the Photos page to see its receipts.

  • Tap a receipt to view it full size.
  • Use the receipt's delete action on the Photos page to remove it. TREVY asks you to confirm.

If the expense has already synced to Xero, removing a receipt from TREVY does not remove a copy already uploaded to Xero. TREVY warns you about this before removing.

If capture or upload fails

Allow camera access in your phone's settings if prompted. If the camera is unavailable, enter the expense manually and try attaching a gallery image later. Check your connection if reading or uploading stalls, and review the saved Photos page before retrying an upload to avoid attaching the same image twice.

Removing a receipt removes the attachment, not the expense or its amount. For recurring expenses, attach later receipts to the appropriate generated occurrence rather than assuming the first receipt will be copied every time.

Tips for a good scan

  • Use good, even lighting and avoid shadows.
  • Place the receipt flat and keep the whole receipt in the frame.
  • Make sure the total and date are clear.
  • If a scan is unreadable, try again or enter the details manually.
